Smart Infrastructure is composed of physical and digital Infrastructure. It aims to improve data-driven decision-making and enable the faster and cheaper operation and maintenance (e.g., better whole-life value). As a society, we increasingly depend on 'smart' Infrastructure that is internet-connected and deployed across many sectors around us, such as transportation, energy, water, and, more importantly, buildings.

The commercialization of 5G new radio (NR) will be able to support three types of connectivities with heterogeneous traffic requirements, i.e., massive machine-type communication (mMTC), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and extended mobile broadband (eMBB).

The Internet changed to a model where billions of everyday objects are interconnected, the Inter-net of Things (IoT). Since the direct IoT-Cloud model works poorly for a fair share of all applications, it changed to a layered architecture. Thereby, Fog and Edge layers were added to the IoT architec-ture as an alternative to diminish cloud communication and perform faster responses.
