Why Taking Control over Your Urban Data Streams Matters

Alex Gluhak and Sarah Gallacher

The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) over the past decade is now enabling a new wave of digital transformation currently taking place in cities and communities around the world. Previous waves of digital transformation focused on improving public service delivery by digitizing time-consuming, often paper-based workflows (e-governance) or better sharing and using data generated within cities and local authorities (open data).

Article 2

The Metaverse and eXtended Reality with Distributed IoT

Theo Kanter

The center of gravity of our private and work lives has shifted to the Internet, facilitated by technological advances such as the Internet of Things. This Internet now allows us, ideas, and things to interact and collaborate in new ways and on a large scale. This shift has also accelerated the search for untethered ways for people and things to interact in real and virtual places. However, at least one lesson learned from using the Internet in our daily lives is that – while it is very good at enabling people to interact with other people – there is much room for improvement in the technology to allow people to interact with things to improve their lives.

Article 3Intelligence Orchestration for Future IoT Platforms

Edgar Ramos, Senthamiz Selvi, Roberto Morabito, Aitor Hernandez, Valentin Tudor, and Jan Höller

The expected increase in IoT investments is mainly driven by the adoption of Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence (AI) enhanced IoT applications. Therefore, accelerating the building, deployment, and management of these IoT applications is crucial and can be enabled by orchestrating IoT components, devices, functions, and systems. However, IoT Intelligence orchestration raises several challenges that need to be addressed to allow a broad spectrum of domain-specific use cases and applications to follow and support business logic.

Article 4IoT Systems in Space Exploration: Data Gathering and Analysis of Martian Environment

Alessandra Rizzardi, Alessandro Ciapponi, and Sabrina Sicari

Space exploration represents a new frontier of human knowledge. Humanity has always tried to overcome its limits: researchers in the field are looking for increasingly advantageous ways to reach far cosmic distances, thus colonizing and learning from new worlds. Specifically, many astronomers define Mars as the "New Earth"; over the years, it was the destination of many missions, mainly searching for life forms. Systems including proper technologies and communication protocols must be put in place to deal with extra-terrestrial exploration
