World-leading developer of graphene sensors and electronics.
(Graphene is a sheet of carbon that is only 1 molecule thick. It is the lightest, strongest, most electrically conductive material known, the “miracle material of the 21st century”)
Application areas:
Life Sciences – Medical Device
Electronics – TVs
Chemical & Biosensors
Smart phone & Smart pad
Desalinization membranes

Presentation relates to Biosensors, great potential scenario for Healthcare, and depicts Graphene Sensors as a Quantum Leap in Chemical & BioSensor Technology
Each of Graphene Frontiers’ Six™ Sensors biosensors consists of a field effect transistor (FET) with a graphene channel. Antibodies are attached directly to the graphene channel. When an antigen binds, the current through the transistor changes, this signal can be analyzed to determine antigen concentration in the sample. As the world’s first two-dimensional material, each binding event affects the current through the graphene channel significantly, making it extremely sensitive.

See What I SeeWhen an object (person, car, truck or other mobile object)...
When an object (person, car, truck or other mobile object) is moving in a specific area (e.g., an unsecure area, a city, or other locale), See What I See (SWIS) can provide monitoring by utilizing the available resources along its route. Resources delivering some level of tracking could be simple (e.g., proximity objects, RFID tags or sensors that simply mark a moving object as it passes by) or more complex, such as cameras that can record the object passing by or even be movable and able to record an object for a short period of time. If the route is known in advance, resources could be ready to track an object without needing to guess where it might be moving next. However, for particularly casual routes, a more dynamic allocation of resources could be provided based on predicting the possible movements and pre-allocation of resources.

In general, SWIS offers a set of tracking functions, where followers can view a moving object’s path and can also recommend or command the object to alter course. In addition, the tracking function can show the object’s predicted route and followers can, once again, suggest alternative routes. In case a monitored object is lost, the last identified position is recorded and an event is generated, such as an alarm in a security related service offering. The event contains all relevant information available about a moving object up until its last monitored position.

For individuals, SWIS can be extended by means of communication. For example, a user being monitored can communicate with followers by means of messaging (“I’m here in Place de la Concorde, can you spot me?”), or they can exchange multimedia content. The service can also support the exchange of streaming video, either generated by the user or by the cameras tracking the user movements). Content providers offering information and multimedia content related to the path a user is following can further extend services for tourists. Privacy constraints are initiated by users who can enable or disable tracking, while followers can request users to activate tracking functions.

Of particular importance is the Resource Provider. This is an entity, such as a user, a company, an organization, or a smart city, that is able to leverage local resources needed to track and visualize moving objects. Unlike the Content Provider, whose focus is information based, the Resource Provider enables resources useful to service execution, from cameras to proximity sensors.

Social SensorsMore and more, people have the possibility to monitor important...
More and more, people have the possibility to monitor important parameters in their home or in their surrounding environment. As an example, take the web site http://bwired.nl/, where each user can have a number of sensors monitoring and measuring parameters related to the functioning of the home or surrounding areas (e.g., the local outside temperature, the humidity, or even some parameters related to pollution, noise and others).

A Social Sensors service is intended to collect the wealth of user generated data, which can then be anonymized and compiled to show benefits for an entire community weighed against individual behavior. For example, it is possible to calculate a medium or average value for some parameters and allow each citizen to compare his own set of parameters with the “average set of values”. In this way, individuals can gauge where they stand in respect to a set description of “virtuous citizen behavior”, such as establishing a proper power consumption footprint. In fact, the availability of this type of data analysis could incentivize good-natured competition, and even encourage people to increase existing, or pursue new, practices perceived to be beneficial to the community as a whole.

Another possible usage is related to integrating user generated data in such a way to compare data and parameters collected directly by citizens versus official data provided by public administrations. One important case could be controlling local pollution vs. the official data monitored in a particular area of big cities.

City tagging allows a person or a service provider to tag places using a virtual place marker to describe a particular feature of places and link to descriptions available via the Internet. Tags can be public or private. Private tags are visible to a closed user group and sometimes they can be viewed only if the user is paying for a service or a single tag. Tags can be organized to outline a trail within a city – one where place markers are easily accessed and followed by users’ with access to smartphones or other mobile devices. Examples of the usage of the basic service are:

  • Users of the service can follow a route that takes the customers to visit places tagged by content providers.
  • Movies can include tags identifying the shooting locations within a city. Books can be augmented with tags and information related to places of relevance. Social media and social network information can be tagged and geolocalized.
  • The tourism industry can tag particular areas of cities providing suggestions, as well as more information about places to visit. A single tourist can tag places that he deems important for his visit and then share them with friends or other users.
  • Tourist guides (e.g., the Michelin Guide) can tag places, and on request, subscribers can be steered towards a chosen restaurant or place to visit, perhaps with reservation assistance being provided.
  • Tags can also have a social value. For example, friends can share their suggestions regarding interesting things or people with like interests can tag bars, clubs and other entertainment places.

A mobile application that updates students with contextual information based on their location, presented by Meera Haridasa

The application UpdateMeNow will allow students to access all the necessary information around their school, without navigating their schools’ website. Students will be able to see the necessary information pertinent to them to increase participation around the campus, and create a more involved campus. The application’s potential is based on the assumption that it is difficult to keep track of your clubs and activities while there is no platform that allows to see everything together and about 70% of students miss participations on event the most likely were interested in.

SwitchBee is the quick switch to a smart home. Our microprocessor controlled, radio operated, smart switches allow users to control lights and appliances from anywhere, anytime, using a smartphone or tablet. We originally embraced the ZigBee protocol (as the name implies). But design goals of power consumption and signal propagation forced us to deviate from the common standards.

Currently several protocols and consortiums are vying for control of the Smart Home and IoT markets. When a leader is established, we will likely incorporate that standard in parallel to our proprietary system. But our performance standards will require that core functions remain on our protocol. We would be happy to share our experience and decision making process.

IoT improving journey experience in public transport for passengers with special needsIn a world of multi-stakeholder information and assets provision on...

In a world of multi-stakeholder information and assets provision on top of millions of real-time interacting and communicating things there is a demand of enhancing sustainability of smart city applications by allowing IoT based systems to reach their full potential. This talk digs into the development of tools and functionalities to evolve and act in a more autonomous way, becoming more reliable and smarter.

Things will be able to learn based on others experiences, while situational knowledge acquisition and analysis will make things aware of conditions and events potentially affecting their behaviour. Adaptive selection approaches will manage the uncertainty and volatility introduced due to real-world dynamics.

COSMOS Project is working in the integration of decentralized management mechanisms in IoT based systems allowing applications to exploit millions of things. Socially-enriched coordination will consider the role and participation scheme of things in and across networks. Management decisions and runtime adaptability will be based on things security, trust, administrative, location, relationships, information, and contextual properties. Thus the resulting platform overcomes current drawbacks and targets novel objectives that goes beyond state of the art solutions.

The validation of such functionalities and technologies will be done through the implementation of two use cases in real scenarios. The first one is going to be deployed in Madrid and the objective is to introduce a system that helps in the handling of passengers with special needs. The second scenario covers Candem district and its aim is to improve the efficiency of heating system. The tools in both cases are IoT devices with learning capabilities. The combination of IoT features and cloud based interactions will result in a win-win situation for citizens and service providers in cities.
